A credit note reverses or reduces an amount you invoiced - a returned item, an overcharge, goodwill. It appears on the customer's statement and reduces their balance automatically.

Step 1: Open the customer

Find the customer with the smart search (top right) and open their page.

Step 2: Create the credit note

Click the + Credit Note button on the customer's page. Capture the items being credited - description, quantity and amount - the same way you would on an invoice. Reference the original invoice in the description or title so everyone can see what it relates to.

Step 3: Save and send

Save the credit note and email or print it for the customer, like any other document. Their statement balance updates automatically.

Fixing a mistake on a recent invoice that has not been paid or sent? It is often cleaner to simply edit the invoice instead of crediting it. Use credit notes when the invoice has already gone out or the books should show the correction.
